NEW YORK, N.Y. - In the first road trip of the season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team travels to New York, N.Y. to take on Columbia University Monday at 7 p.m. at the Francis S. Levien Gymnasium.

In their first game of the season, the Hawks fell to the Tulane Green Wave, Friday night at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center, by a score of 91-62. After trailing 37-30 at halftime, UMES was outscored 54-32 in the second half of the season opener.

Senior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied 17 points in the loss and junior Dishawn Bradshaw (Baltimore, Md.) and senior Freddy Obame Obame (Libreville, Gabon) each contributed 11 points. Junior Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) led the team in rebounds with nine.

UMES is playing their first game in the city of New York since 2005 when they lost to St. John's (Queens, N.Y.), 77-40, at Carnesecca Arena.

Many of the Hawk players will be playing in front of family and friends as they either call the New York/New Jersey area home or have played there before arriving at UMES. White and freshman Joseph Swift are both natives of Brooklyn while Obame Obame played junior college at Monroe College. Freshman Mike Spence (Irvington, N.J.), redshirt sophomore Mark Robertson (Lakewood, N.J.) and redshirt senior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) all hail from the Garden State.

Columbia lost its season opener to La Salle, 82-71, last Friday night. The Lions return 12 letterwinners from the 2009-10 team that finished 11-17 overall and 5-9 in the Ivy League. First year head coach Kyle Smith, who was hired in May, spent the last nine years as the associate head coach at St. Mary's. Junior Noruwa Agho, who was named to the Pre-season First Team All-Ivy prior to this season, leads the Columbia squad. Agho is the second leading returning scorer in the league with 16.3 points and he scored a team high 26 points in the opener against La Salle.

Tonight marks the first meeting between UMES and Columbia. The last Ivy League opponent for the Hawks was in 2008 when Dartmouth beat UMES, 86-62, at Leede Arena in Hanover, N.H. The last time UMES beat an Ivy League school was on Dec. 20, 2005 when they beat Brown, 59-57. The last Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent for the Lions was Delaware State when they won, 47-41, on Nov. 12, 2007.

Monday's game can be heard live on the Hawks Radio Network at Sportstalk 960 AM and on the Internet at UMESHawks.com thanks to allinbroadcasting.com. Bret Lasky has the call for UMES with Dave Vatz live in studio.
