PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- After the UMES campus, including its student-athletes, completed finals week, the men's and women's basketball teams got ready for weekend battles. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the games did not go their way.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Facing one of the toughest teams in the country in #8 Pittsburgh, the Hawks fell to the Panthers 97-64 on the road Saturday night. Late into the first half, the Hawks kept the game close with Pittsburgh, trailing by four with 6:48 left after two baskets from Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.), but the Panthers pulled away with a 20-4 run in a little more than five minutes to seal the game. UMES fell to 2-8 on the season.
Haley finished with 17 points to lead UMES along with three rebounds and three assists. Tyler Hines (Sickerville, N.J.) got 13 points off 5-6 shooting plus three rebounds, while Dishawn Bradshaw (Baltimore, Md.) ended with 12 points and four rebounds.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Lady Hawks played their in-state rival Towson tough, coming back from an early 13-point deficit, but fell to the Tigers after a 15-1 second half surge by Towson put UMES away 61-50. UMES goes to 2-4 this year.
Kwinnyata Mercer (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) had the highest point total of the season for the Lady Hawks with 21 points off 6-11 shooting, including 6-8 from the free throw line plus four steals. Chena Parker (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) nearly got a double-double, earning ten points and nine rebounds.
