Campbell jumped on the scoreboard first in the opening inning of Game 1. Bangi led off with a single through the right side. Bangi scored when UMES pitcher Donnie Haines (Carneys Point, N.J.) threw away a pick-off attempt at first that rolled down the right-field line, allowing Bangi to come around from first.
The Camels added two runs in the second inning. Bangi struck again with a two-out RBI double scoring Ben Fish who got on with a single. Ellis Lowe followed with a single through the left side to chase Bangi home.
The hosts extended its advantage to six in the third and knocked Haines out of the game in the process. The big blow in the frame was a two-run double to right center with no one out by Zach Johnson.
Haines (0-3), who was relieved by Matt Witte (Westminster, Md.), went just two innings giving up seven hits, six runs and two walks while fanning one.
Witte didn't fair much better as CU put up another five runs on five hits with two errors in the fourth to take an 11-0 lead. Bangi tripled to the gap in right to make the score 7-0 before Alex Aycoth and Johnson tallied RBI base hits.
Logan Self reached on a fielder's choice with one out, stealing second and scoring on a throwing error from the catcher. Self scored when D.J. Johnson doubled down the left-field line before Kevin Nelson lined out to third to end the inning.
UMES loaded the bases on the fifth on consecutive singles by junior Nick Wiggins (Littleton, Colo.), and freshmen Lucas Koenig (Berlin, Md.) and Tre-Von Johnson (East New Marker, Md.) with one out. The Hawks plated a run when senior Phil Vaughn (Clinton, Md.) hit into a fielder's choice to shortstop.
Campbell starter Ben Brown, who had been perfect through four innings, averted any further damage after Vaughn stole second, getting J.J. Corriveau (Hollywood, Fla.) to bounce to short to end the threat. UMES scored again in the seventh to make it 11-2. Johnson drew a one-out walk and stole second on Camels' relief pitcher David Rivera. Corriveau then singled to left center on a 3-1 count to bring home Johnson.
Campbell outhit UMES, 19-6, and benefitted from five Hawks' errors in the win. Brown (2-2) earned the win, going five innings. He allowed three hits and one walk while striking out six.
UMES got a solid performance out of freshman right-hander Brandon Mothershead (Ellicott City, Md.) out of the bullpen. Mothershead settled things down in the middle innings. He went 3.2 frames, scattering seven hits and three runs with no walks and two strikeouts before leaving with an injury in the eighth.
The Hawks scored first in the third inning of the second game of the doubleheader. Junior Luis Mena (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Koenig started the inning with back-to-back singles and Vaughn coaxed a walk to load the bases. With a full count and nobody out Corriveau hit into a double play to short but Mena trotted home for the lead.
The advantage was short-lived, though. Campbell scored twice in its half of the inning to take a 2-1 edge. Alan Denman tied the game on an infield single with one out, scoring Nelson and Bangi stole home right before Denman was tagged out caught steal to end the inning.
The Camels put the game away in the fifth with a four-run outburst. Cameron Nelson led of the inning with home run that carried out to right center. A Denman single put runners on first and third for Zach Johnson, who brought tem both home with a triple to center field.
