BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Cameron Nelson went 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored as Campbell completed a three-game sweep of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team with a 13-0 win at Taylor Field Wednesday.
Campbell, which banged out 13 hits, improved to 12-6 with the victory. UMES (0-15) managed only five base hits against seven Camels' starters.
Four CU players registered multiple-hit games and four others scored at least twice. Josh Holsky also delivered a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the sixth and was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and two batted in.
Junior Luis Mena (Cape Coral, Fla.) had a two hits and walk in three at-bats to lead the Hawks offensively.
After the Hawks put two runners on base in each of the first two innings but failed to score, Campbell scored five runs on just two hits in the bottom of the second to take the lead.
Nelson led off the frame with a solo home run that just snuck over the right-field fence. UMES starter Cameron Zimmerman (Harrisburg, Pa.) then hit Blake Boyce and waked D.J. Johnson to put runners on first and second. After sacrifice bunt moved each up a station before Kevin Nelson lifted a fly to right to score Boyce and make it 2-0.
Johnson stole third prior to a Chris Bangi walk and freshman Tony Gonzales (New Braunfels, Texas) came in for Zimmerman (0-2). A Lucas Koenig (Berlin, Md.) error, one of five charged to the Hawks on the day, allowed Johnson to touch home with two outs. Alan Denman the singled to right center, scoring Bangi from third to for a 4-0 edge. The Camels added one more in the inning when Ellis Lowe scored on a Gonzales wild pitch.
Up, 6-0, in the fifth, Johnson doubled down the left-field line to score Boyce. Johnson came in himself on a throwing error by junior J.J. Corriveau (Hollywood, Fla.). Corriveau had four errors in the contest for 11 on the season. Lowe gave Campbell a nine-run lead with an RBI single through the left side and was out trying to stretch it to a double.
Holsky's bomb down the left-field line extended to lead to 11-0 and the hosts added two more in the eighth for the final margin.
Joe Wagstaff (1-0) earned the win going the first three innings for the Camels. He allowed just two hits and two walks before three pitchers combined to hold UMES hitless over the middle three innings.
The Mena, Donnie Haines (Carneys Point, N.J.) and Corriveau picked up three hits - all singles - off Colin Parker and Daniel Gardo in the seventh and eighth but couldn't end the shutout.
UMES is back in action Saturday (March 20), opening a three-game series at Savannah State first pitch of Game 1 is 1 p.m.
