HAWKS EARN FIRST WIN; SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER AT LA SALLE

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Junior right-hander Matt Witte (Westminster, Md.) pitched four innings, scattering four hits and two runs and freshman Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) batted 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two driven in as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team picked up its first win of the season, 8-4, over La Salle in Game 2 of a doubleheader Wednesday.

The Hawks, who dropped the first game of the day at Hank DaVincent Field, 10-6, also got multiple hits from senior Phil Vaughn (Clinton, Md.) and junior Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) to break their 18-game losing streak to start the season. The Explorers moved to 4-14 with the split.

Witte improved to 1-3 while allowing just one earned run and two walks. He also struck out three.

UMES built a 7-0 lead through three-and-a-half innings and held off a late La Salle charge to earn the win.

Vaughn walked to lead off the game, stole second, coming around to score when Johnson singled to second base to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks added three more in the third, two of which scored a fielding error by shortstop Brian Meagher.

Lucas Koenig (Berlin, Md.), J.J. Corriveau (Hollywood, Fla.) and Vaughn loaded the bases in the fourth on two hits and a walk to force La Salle starter Sean Kennedy out of the game. John the coaxed a walk off reliever Jerry Dougherty to make it 2-0 before Chaikowsky followed with an RBI single to right and Vaughn scored when Elliott Alston (Littleton, Colo.) hit into a double play.

La Salle responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the forth to cut the deficit to two. Brendan Norton hit an RBI double to center field, scoring Meagher and Eric Kammler added an RBI groundout to first to make the score 7-2.

Haines gave UMES a final marker in the fifth, scoring when third baseman Jon Gyles throw the ball away at first.

La Salle tallied twice in the sixth off of lefty John DesChamps (Virginia Beach, Va.) before the game was called for dankness, giving the guests their first win of the year.

Norton and Tony Negrin each had two hits in three at-bats for La Salle. Kennedy (0-3) took the loss for the Explorers. He gave up seven runs on six hits and three walks in three innings.

Meagher gave La Salle a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 with an RBI double to center after John Malloy led off with a walk and stole second.

La Salle tacked on eight more runs between the second and fourth innings to take a 9-0 lead.

The Hawks pushed across their first run of the day in the fifth when Vaughn reached on an error with two outs that scored Luis Mena (Cape Coral, Fla.).

Down 10-1 in the top of the seventh, UMES mounted a comeback, scoring five runs before a pair of La Salle hurlers shut it down for the win. A three-run homer to right by Johnson, his second of the year, highlighted the inning.

Kevin (1-3) went the first three innings to earn the win while Karim Gonzalez (Mexico City, Mexico) took the loss, his fifth.

Johnson was 4-for-6 in the doubleheader with the home run, two runs scored and five RBIs while Vaughn went 3-for-7 with four runs scored and one driven in.

UMES opens MEAC play Saturday in a doubleheader at Coppin State beginning at 12 p.m.
