Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. - John Lynch went 6-for-8 with three doubles and two runs driven in and Jason Barker and Richie Salter combined to throw 12 innings and allow one earned run as Norfolk State swept a doubleheader from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team, 11-1 and 4-1, at Marty L. Miller Field Saturday.

The Spartans, who improved to 10-12-1 (3-5 MEAC), broke open a 1-1 game in the opener with an eight-run sixth and added two more in the eighth to secure the win. The nightcap saw the hosts spoil another solid start from UMES sophomore lefty John DesChamps (Virginia Beach, Va.) with two runs in each of the third and fifth frames. DesChamps (1-6) had his fifth complete game in seven starts this season.

He allowed four earned runs on nine hits while fanning six and not issuing a walk, but was outdueled by Salter, who scattered five hits and a run. He improved to 1-0, striking out five and walking one in four innings.

Sophomore Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) had a career day in the twin bill with three hits in six at-bats. He tallied a double and had the game-tying RBI in the third inning of Game 1.

The Spartans struck first in the opening game, manufacturing a 1-0 lead when John Rasberry scored on a Chris Joyce groundout. Rasberry reached on a throwing error by Hawks' third baseman Luis Mena (Cape Coral, Fla.), stole second and moved to third on Brandon Hairston grounder.

UMES (2-27, 1-6) evened things on Bagwell's RBI single through the left side of the infield to score Donnie Haines (Carneys Point, N.J.) from second. Haines singled to begin the inning and was sacrificed to second by J.J. Corriveau (Hollywood, Fla.).

The floodgates opened in the sixth as NSU sent 12 men to plate and collected seven hits to open a 9-1 advantage. Ryan Wiggins, Rasberry and James Taylor each had run-scoring singles in the inning. Lynch also chipped in win an RBI double.

The game ended in the eighth due to the 10-run rule in conference games when Joyce and Cameron Parsons had RBI singles.

Tony Gonzales (New Braunfels, Texas) took the loss on the mound for the Hawks. In his second start of the year, Gonzales (0-2) allowed four runs - three earned - on six hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out four and walked three.

NSU took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the second game. Taylor singled to shortstop with one out and stole second, before being singled home by Rasberry. Later in the inning, Lynch singled to left field to collect Rasberry from second.

The Hawks cut its deficit to one with a run in the top of the fourth. Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) beat out a roller along the first-base line for a single and moved to second when Nick Wiggins (Littleton, Colo.) grounded out with one gone in the inning. Then, Mena got UMES on the board with a base hit up the middle.

Juan Herrera delivered a two-out, two-run double down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Lynch and Joyce to put the game away.

The teams close the series with 12 p.m. game Sunday.
