ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Four players tallied double-digit kills as freshman Kaveingna Lea'Aetoa (Salt Lake City, Utah) had a match-high 17 and junior Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.) chipped in with 16 but it wasn't enough for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team which fell, 3-2 (14-25, 25-15, 25-16, 23-25, 15-13), at the Kristin Dickmann Memorial Tournament at Navy's Wesley A. Brown Field House Saturday.
Hartford improves to 5-9 with the win and is 2-0 in the tournament after defeating Navy in five games Friday. The loss for UMES (4-8) snaps a three-match win streak and is its fifth in six five-setters this season.
"We showed a lot of heart after coming out flat and cold in the first set," said UMES head coach Don Metil. "The team rebounded nicely in sets two and three but unforced errors again cost us the match in the fourth and fifth sets."
Redshirt senior Samantha Chukwura (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded 11 kills and freshman Maline Vaitai (Salt Lake City, Utah) had 10 for the Hawks in the loss.
Hartford charged out to 10-1 lead in the first game and never relinquished the lead. UH was aided by a sluggish UMES.
The Hawks had seven errors and seven kills in 28 attacks for a .000 hitting percentage.
UMES rebounded to win the second game comfortably. The Hawks jumped out to a 12-9 advantage, forcing the first of two Hartford timeouts in the game. From there, UMES scored six of the next points prior to Hartford's second breather.
Then, with Vaitai serving, the Hawks tallied four straight - including a pair of aces - for a 22-12 lead.
UMES hit.438 in the second stanza with 16 kills and just two errors in 32 attacks and held Hartford to .147 (10-5-34).
The Hawks led, 8-2, at the first Hartford timeout of the third game and pulled out a nine-point victory to go up, 2-1. UMES hit a match-best.478 with 13 kills and two errors.
Hartford led, 17-15, in the fourth game before a Lea'Aetoa block gave UMES a 19-18 lead. The Hawks led, 21-19, heading into a UH timeout. Hartford, though, erased the deficit to force a deciding fifth game.
The final game featured nine ties and seven lead changes. UMES was up, 8-6 at the changeover before Hartford took a 13-11 advantage. The Hawks fended off one match point but couldn't do it a second time as a blast from Hartford's Kami Nethersole came off the UMES block.
Nethersole paced a group of three Hartford players in double figures with 15 kills.
UMES outhit Hartford .278-.250 for the match.
Sophomore Stephanie Sierra (El Paso, Texas) had a career-high 47 assists in leading the UMES offense. Freshman Jingquiao Li (Beijing, China) tied for the match high with 12 digs. Lea'Aetoa led the UMES block with five total blocks (three solo) as the Hawks outblocked Hartford, 8-6.
