DURHAM, N.C. - Reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week Kaveingna Lea'Aetoa (Salt Lake City, Utah) led a group of three in double digits with a match-high 15 kills as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's volleyball team defeated Hampton, 3-1 (25-10, 24-26, 25-22, 25-13), in the NCCU Tournament at McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium Friday.
Freshman Maline Vaitai (Salt Lake City, Utah) and redshirt senior Samantha Chukwura (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied 14 and 11 kills respectively, to help the Hawks to a season-high .327 hitting percentage. UMES had 49 kills and 14 errors on 107 attacks while holding Hampton to .153 (35-18-111) from the floor.
Lea'Aetoa also posted a match-best .653 percentage with the 15 kills on 23 attacks with no errors.
The win gives UMES (6-8) victories in five of its last six, while Hampton (1-15) lost its second match of the year to the Hawks.
Sophomore Stephanie Sierra (El Paso, Texas) recorded her second consecutive double-double and fifth of the season with 39 assists and 12 digs.
The Hawks took the first game easily, jumping out to an 8-3 advantage in the early going and were never seriously threatened.
Hampton fought back in the second game to tie the match. The Pirates went up, 6-2, before the Hawks evened the game at 10 with a junior Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.) kill and took their first lead with a junior Rebecca Prado (Annandale, N.J.) kill on the next point.
UMES opened its biggest lead of the game at 15-11 on a block by Vaitai and Chukwura, but Hampton regained control on a Juliana Chavez ace for a 22-21 lead. The lead changed hands twice more before Hampton's Aaryn Harrison closed the game with a kill.
The Hawks took the third game for a 2-1 advantage. A Lea'Aetoa kill gave UMES its first lead of the game at 10-9 with the Hawks widening the gap to 20-15 to force a Hampton timeout. The Pirates cut the led to 21-19 before a pair of Sheileen Pagan aces gave HU the lead back. A service error on the next point knotted things at 22 and the Hawks won the next two for game point. A Hampton hitting error from Pagan nailed down the win for UMES.
UMES hit a team-high .412 in the game with 10 kills on 17 attacks and two errors.
UMES was up, 7-1, in the fourth game and led by as many as 12 on its way to the win. Chukwura punctuated the game with an emphatic kill for a 20-11 margin and Vaitai finished the match with another strong swing.
The Hawks won the blocking battle, 5-4, paced by Chukwura's three block assists. Bowens tied her career high with five of the Hawks' 12 service aces.
Harrison was the only HU player with double-figure kills with 14. Pagan had six aces and 13 digs and Chavez registered 26 assists for the Pirates.
UMES plays East Tennessee State later Friday at 5 p.m.
