NORFOLK, Va. - Junior Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) was tabbed as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
The 6-6 forward/center grabbed 26 rebounds and one steal to aid the Hawks to a 1-1 record last week. In an 83-82 win over North Carolina A&T last Monday, Hines pulled down 11 rebounds and recorded 10 points for his fourth double double of the season.
Against Florida A&M, he posted a game-high 15 rebounds and eight points in 38 minutes of play. This was Hines' third straight double-figure rebounding game and has recorded double-digit rebounds in five of the last seven games for UMES.
"Tyler is extremely deserving of this honor," stated head coach Frankie Allen. "He always plays with so much heart and determination on the court. He's one of the top rebounders in the conference and it never surprises me when he has a great game."
Also receiving MEAC honors was redshirt junior Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.). Haley was named an "Other Top Performer" as he averaged 18.5 points over the two games for the Hawks.
Hines, Haley and their UMES teammates take on Bethune-Cookman Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach, Fla.
