Trey Holmes went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBI to help Appalachian State to a 13-2 win over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team at McNair Field Saturday.
Holmes' grand slam off Zachary Saca (Elk Grove, Calif.) highlighted a seven-run seventh inning for Appalachian State (2-0) as the Mountaineers broke open a 3-2 game.
UMES (0-2) scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game, 2-2, before ASU added one in the bottom of the sixth when Jeremy Dowdy scored on a throwing error.
Then, leading 4-2, in the seventh, Holmes took the first pitch of the at-bat over the right-center field fence, scoring Dowdy Tyler Tewell and Doug Jones to make it 8-2.
Appalachian State added five insurance runs, two more in the seventh and three in the eighth, to account for the final score.
Down, 2-0 in the top of the fifth, the Hawks, who collected nine hits on the afternoon, scored their first run of the day. Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) doubled to leadoff the inning before Luis Mena (Cape Coral, Fla.) singled to left to cut the deficit in half.
With David Port on in relief of Lawrence Pardo in the six UMES struck again. Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) tripled down the right-field line and with one out, Nick Wiggins (Littleton, Colo.) lifted a fly ball to left to chase home Chaikowsky and knot the game.
Matt Witte (Westminster, Md.) took the loss on the mound for UMES, pitching six innings, scattering five hits and three runs, all earned. He struck out two and walked four.
Mena and Wiggins paced the UMES offense with two hits apiece. Mena, Elliott Alston (Littleton, Colo.) and Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) each drew walks for the Hawks. Tewell and Dowdy also had a pair of hits each for ASU while Dowdy scored three times.
Port earned the win for the Mountaineers. He pitched two innings, allowed the one hit and one run while striking out one.
The teams close their series Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
