Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After falling behind early, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team was unable to recover and fell, 77-55, to Hampton University Wednesday evening in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

"Hampton University is a very good, balanced basketball team," commented head coach Frankie Allen. "We didn't play as well as we had been over the past few games but I think having Hampton as an opponent had a lot to do with the way we played. We never really got over the hump and Hampton does a very good job of protecting leads."

The Pirates came out of the blocks fast, getting transition baskets and 3-pointers en route to a 40-28 halftime lead.

The Hawks cut the lead to seven with 17:18 remaining in the game with a layup from senior Freddy Obame Obame (Libreville, Gabon) to force Hampton to take a timeout.

The Pirates responded with a 15-6 run to take a 59-43 lead with 8:59 left in the game.

UMES tried to stay within striking distance, but each time they had a chance to cut the margin, Hampton came up with defensive stops, baskets or second chance opportunities.

The Hawks hit their final field goal of the day with 3:46 remaining with a jumper from junior Dishawn Bradshaw (Baltimore, Md.) to bring the score to 71-55.

Redshirt junior Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) led UMES in scoring with 17 points while Bradshaw contributed ten of his own. Junior Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) recorded eight rebounds and freshman Joseph Swift (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied five steals to lead the Hawks.

Darrion Pellum scored a game-high 23 points for the Pirates in addition to his seven rebounds and four assists.
