ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team trailed by just one run through five-and-a-half innings at Navy on Tuesday, but the Midshipmen scored six unanswered runs to pull away for a 10-3 win at Max Bishop Stadium.
UMES (5-31) hung tough, playing Navy (23-16-1) to a 4-3 game heading to the bottom of the sixth before the Mids scored two in the sixth and four in the eighth.
Jeffrey Fleetwood (Delmar, Md.) led the UMES nine-hit offense, going 3-for-5 with an RBI while Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) also collected two hits. Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.), Luis Mena (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) all scored runs for UMES.
Chris Campbell was 1-for-4 with three runs driven in and Nick Driscoll and Greg Dupell each tallied three of Navy's 14 hits.
Navy got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the second. The first three Midshipmen of the frame reached with singles, the last of which, to left center by Dave Milanes, produced the game's first run. two batters later, Jeff Bland extended the lead on a groundout to shortstop from Campbell.
The Hawks cut the lead in half in the fourth, 2-1. UMES' Campbell lead off the inning with a single up the middle and stole second base. A line single to left by Fleetwood followed to put runners on first and third before Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) beat the double-play relay throw from second to score Campbell.
Navy added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on consecutive RBI hits with two outs. Dupell led off with a double to left-center field and with two outs, Driscoll singled to left to push the lead to 3-1. Campbell, the next hitter, made it 4-1 with a single left.
UMES, again, shaved the deficit to one at 4-3 in the top of the fifth. With Dwayne Gammage on in relief of Navy starter Jordan Heller, Chaikowsky was hit by a pitch. Chaikowsky stole second before Nick Wiggins (Littleton, Colo.) and Mena walked to load the bases with no outs.
Campbell grounded into a double play that forced Chaikowsky in and Fleetwood followed with a base hit through the right side that played Mena Navy's Campbell made it 5-3 with a groundout and Andrew Hahn had an RBI base hit through the right side for a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth off Sean Woods (Clinton, Md.) and Cody Cauffman (Salisbury, Md.).
The Midshipmen closed the scoring with four runs on four hits and two errors for the final margin. The inning was highlighted by an RBI single by Alex Azor and sacrifice fly by Milanes.
Heller (1-2) pitched four innings, allowing five hits and a run with five strikeouts for the win. Zachary Saca (Elk Grove, Calif.) fell to 0-4, pitching for innings and scattering four runs and seven hits for UMES.
UMES hosts Florida A&M in the first of a three-game set Friday at 3 p.m.
