PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Javier Olivas will begin his third season with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Cross Country and Track & Field staff for the 2011-2012 season. Spending last season as a member of UC Santa Barbara'sTrack and Field coaching staff, this season he will rejoin the UMES coaching staff in his first year as an assistant coach.
Olivas spent his first two seasons at UMES as a graduate assistant where he obtained a Master's in the School of Agriculture and Natural Sciences. He also oversaw the pole vaulters and all throwers for indoor and outdoor track and field. In his first season as coach of the throwers in 2008-09, his group broke all school records. In addition, Olivas served as the director of strength and conditioning for the men's and women's teams at UMES.
While at UMES, Olivas coached two USA Junior National Qualifiers, three regional qualifiers, one conference record setter, six conference champions and 21 all-conference performers.
Olivas, of Del Rio, Texas, is a 2008 graduate of Texas A&M University. Before his two-years as a graduate assistant at UMES, Olivas competed at Texas A&M University. Olivas was a three-time All-Big 12 performer as well as a two-time all-region performer in the shot put. In the classroom, he earned two Verizon Scholar-Athlete awards.
In the 2008 season, Olivas qualified for the NCAA Championships in the shot put after finishing fourth in the Midwest Region, where he set a career best of 18.03 meters. Indoors, he set a career best of 17.68 in the shot put during the Kentucky Invitational to become the No. 9 performer on the A&M all-time list.
