VEVERKA, GURROLA NAMED PRMC UMES ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

April 23, 2012

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Junior Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) and sophomore Michael Veverka (Brunswick, Md.) have been named the Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the week of April 23. This is the first time that either student-athlete has received the award in 2012.

Gurrola was a dual threat for UMES this week as the junior was 2-for-5 at the plate and threw a pair of complete games. She allowed just three earned runs in six innings in Saturday's opener against Hampton, before throwing five innings with two strikeouts in the nightcap. She tallied 23 fly outs in the two games and walked just three batters over 11 innings on the mound. The nightcap also saw Gurrola go 2-for-2 with one RBI and one putout.

Veverka was the top UMES golfer at the MEAC Showcase, where he placed 11th with a score of 237. He shot the ninth-best round of any golfer at the tournament on the last day after he concluded the round with a 78. He finished the tournament with consecutive scores of 78 and ranked in the top-10 across the three-day event on par-5 holes.

The softball team looks to get in the win column when they travel to Morgan State for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m. The golf team is back in action on Friday, May 11 at the PGA National Minority Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
