LEXINGTON, Va. - It was a tough go for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team on Saturday as the Hawks were held to two hits in a 17-0 loss to Virginia Military Institute. The loss is the seventh consecutive for the Hawks to begin the year and fall to 0-2 in the tournament.

With the decision, UMES falls to 0-7 on the year, while VMI improves to 7-2.

UMES (0-7) saw senior Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) reach base for the sixth straight game after he walked with two outs in the first inning. Freshman Jesse Stinnett (Madison Heights, Va.) took to the hill for UMES and allowed a single tally in the first, before giving up four in the second. The righty blanked VMI through the next two innings and would exit after the fifth.

Stinnett threw five innings in the game and gave up five runs (three earned) on 10 hits and two walks. Sophomore Will Turley (Greensboro, Md.) replaced Stinnett in the sixth and got one out, before conceding the sophomore Jordan Bone (Pittston, Pa.), who concluded the inning without giving up an earned run.

Junior Michael Epps (Pottstown, Pa.) threw a scoreless eighth and freshman Kameron Raison (Newark, Del.) finished the game off for the Hawks in the ninth.

The Hawks registered two hits altogether, the first being a seventh inning bunt single by junior Greg Turlik (Gaithersburg, Md.). Campbell led off the ninth with a leadoff single, but was unable to move around after the VMI bullpen finished the game retiring the final three hitters.

VMI was paced by Jordan Tarsovich, who was 2-for-4 with three runs and four RBI. Will Malbon and Drew Bryan each had a game-high three hits, while Josh Worthley and Sheldon Shifflett each had two RBI. Andrew Woods picked up the win after fanning six and allowing one hit in seven innings.

The Hawks return to action tomorrow, March 2, with a game against Buffalo at 10:30 a.m. The game is the first of two for UMES on the day as they conclude play in the tournament with a bout against VMI at 2 p.m. The contests have been moved from their original time slots as inclement weather is expected in the Lexington area later in the day.
