April 13, 2014

Final Stats

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team fell in the final game of its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series against Norfolk State on Sunday as the Hawks dropped a 5-3 decision to the Spartans. NSU takes the series by a 2-1 advantage as they benefitted from 16 runners left on base by UMES.

Senior Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) concluded the weekend 9-for-12 as he was 3-for-4 in the contest with a double. The senior was 4-for-4 in yesterday's opener and had two hits in Saturday's second game. Senior Nick Cooper (Delmar, Del.) had a career-high three hits, while sophomore Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.) walked three times. Three UMES players had RBIs on the day and Bull scored two runs.

It was Norfolk State (12-19) that scored first on the day with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Zach Markel sent home Andre Moore for the first run and later scored on a wild pitch. The Hawks brought the game to within one the next half when freshman Justin Dattilo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) walked to score senior Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.), who had previously doubled.

The game then went quiet for the next three innings, before UMES (8-19) made a rally with two outs in the fourth. The Hawks put runners on first and second, but an NSU pitching change saw Jeff Di Fulgo fan the second hitter he faced to end the rally.

NSU upped its advantage to 3-1 in the fifth when Ross Cardwell homered to right.

The Hawks would load the bases again in their next plate appearance. UMES was unable to come away with a run in the frame, however, as UMES went down in order to end the push. NSU scored one in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to deep center that scored Andre Moore from second.

UMES brought the game to 5-2 with single tallies in the seventh and eighth. The Hawks scored the first on a sacrifice fly by junior Joshua James (Milford, Del.) to score sophomore Connor Breslin (Saylorsburg, Pa.), before junior Greg Turlik (Gaithersburg, Md.) singled home Bull.

Norfolk State posted six runs in the ninth to up their advantage and put the game out of reach.

NSU used six pitchers on the day as Cooper Jones (1-3) picked up the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Norfolk State posted 17 hits on the day, eight of which were in the final frame. Moore led the charge with three hits, four runs and two stolen bases. He was one of six hitters with multi-hit games as NSU posted 17 hits altogether. Devin Hemmerich was fantastic out of the bullpen as he threw four innings to conclude the game and register his fourth save.

UMES will head north for its next contest when the Hawks make the trek to Bethlehem, Pa., to take on Lehigh for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 15 at 1 p.m.
