LATE EAGLE RALLY TOO MUCH FOR HAWKS IN SERIES FINALE

April 6, 2014

Final Stats

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team held a 4-0 lead through the first seven innings of play, but four runs by Coppin State in the final frame proved to be the difference, as the Hawks fell to the Eagles, 4-3, in the series rubber match on Sunday afternoon. The decision was UMES' fifth loss in its past five games.

UMES (5-17) and Coppin State (8-17) were each scoreless through three, before the Hawks used an RBI single by junior Greg Turlik (Gaithersburg, Md.) to score senior Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.), who led off with a single. Following two scoreless innings by freshman Philip Berry (Milford, Del.), Turlik scored Campbell on another RBI single to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks upped their advantage to three after senior Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) doubled and came home the next hitter on a single by sophomore Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.).

The first seven innings saw Berry retire 16 consecutive hitters, as he allowed just one first inning single and was perfect for five straight innings. The freshman would run out of gas in the eighth, however, as three hits by Coppin State displaced him from the game. He was replaced by junior Devin Repine (Salisbury, Md.), who was unable to tame the hot CSU bats. Repine allowed a pair of RBI singles as Coppin State capped a four run inning to take a 4-3 lead in the eighth.

UMES went down quietly in the eighth and Repine blanked Coppin State in the top of the ninth to set up the Hawks in their final at-bat. The maroon and gray saw its first two batters reach safely in the ninth, but a putout and a runner interference double play helped CSU escape the jam and take the series.

Campbell and Bull each paced the Hawks with three hits on the day, while Turlik had two hits and two RBI. The Hawks saw eight batters hit safely and outhit the Eagles, 13-6.

Berry finished the day by throwing 7.1 innings of four hit ball. He struck out seven hitters and walked just three to post his best performance of the season. Repine was saddled with the loss after giving up one run in 1.2 innings.

Coppin State was guided by Dillon O'Brien, who allowed 10 hits in 5.1 innings with four strikeouts and no walks. John Walls was the only Eagle to post two hits and four others recorded RBIs in the contest. Michael Roberts picked up the win for CSU after he struck out two and blanked the Hawks in two innings of work.

UMES will stay at home for its next contest, when the Hawks host Navy on Tuesday at 3 p.m. The contest will be the first of two against the Midshipmen as the Hawks travel to Annapolis on Wednesday as well.
