Jan. 14, 2015 NORFOLK, Va. - Sophomore track runner Khalil Rmidi Kinini (Malaga, Spain) and senior track & field thrower Dillon Simon (Roseau, Dominica) were both honored by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference as part of its track & field players of the week, as announced by the conference today. Rmidi Kinini was chosen as the men's track performer of the week while Simon won among men's field participants.
Each successfully toppled a school record last Saturday at the Navy Invite. Rmidi Kinini shattered the 5000 meter run record with his time of 14:26.94, beating a time that stood as UMES' best for almost nine years. Simon, however, beat a record that was only months old with his 19.03 meter toss in the shot put. He personally set the previous top mark back in February 2014 with an 18.81 meter throw.
Rmidi Kinini and Simon join Le'Quisha Parker of Hampton and Desiree Richardson of Bethune-Cookman as the conference's top performers. Additionally, Rmidi Kinini also earned the distinction last week for breaking the school record in the mile run.
The UMES track team will compete Friday at the Gotham Cup in New York City.
