Jan. 18, 2015 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team faces South Carolina State University on Monday evening at William P. Hytche Athletic Center. UMES (10-9, 3-1) will go for their third straight victory overall when the Bulldogs visit Princess Anne.
UMES currently sits in fourth place in the MEAC standings after three consecutive conference wins going back to December. Last week, the Hawks notched a pair of blowout wins at Morgan State and home versus Savannah State. The 87-57 win on Saturday over the Savannah State Tigers was the largest margin of victory over a MEAC foe since December 3, 2001, when they beat Florida A&M by 31 points. Devin Martin (Baltimore, Md.) nailed five three-pointers in the second half on Saturday, tallying a game-high 23 points. The Hawks controlled the paint, outrebounding the Tigers 39-23, while senior forward Mike Myers (Camden, N.J.) adding 20 points.
With the latest win, UMES has now raised their record to 10-9 through 19 games. This is the latest that a Hawks team has held a winning record since the 1993-94 season. That year is also the most recent season where UMES finished with an overall winning mark, at 16-12 under head coach Rob Chavez. The victory over Savannah State also clinched double digit wins for the season, the second time in 13 years that a Hawks team has eclipsed 10 victories.
The Hawks have been dominant in nearly all aspects of their recent MEAC contests. The Hawk guards with Martin, along with Ryan Andino and Devon Walker, have caught fire in recent games. Against Savannah State, UMES nailed 8-of-15 three-point attempts for a 53.3% percent clip. For the season, the Hawks have made 36.6% percent of long range shots, tops in the conference. Meanwhile, Myers has been a force inside, reaching the top 10 in both scoring (15.2) and rebounding (6.9) in the MEAC.
South Carolina State (5-14, 3-2) comes into Monday's game fresh off a road loss at Delaware State. The Bulldogs dropped Saturday's contest in Dover by a final score of 60-49. With Saturday's results, UMES leapfrogged over South Carolina State in the MEAC standings. Freshman Edward Stephens leads South Carolina State as the Bulldogs' only double digit scorer on a per-game basis. One of the strengths of the squad is protecting the basketball, with a +0.95 turnover margin per game. The Bulldogs are one of only three teams in the MEAC with a positive turnover margin for the season.
The visitors from Orangeburg hold a heavy advantage in the head-to-head series, as South Carolina State has won 47 of the previous 60 meetings between the two schools. The Bulldogs have won four consecutive matchups against the Hawks with the most recent UMES win coming on January 12, 2009. Murray Garvin, the Bulldogs' head coach, was an assistant under Bobby Collins at Winston Salem State University from 2008 to 2010.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Monday evening following the conclusion of the women's basketball game. Hawk fans can listen to all the action live on the Hawks Radio Network, powered by SFMSports.net and Fox Sports 960 AM.
