ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Traveling for the first time in 2015, the Lady Hawks track squad found good fortune on a familiar course. In their second trip to Navy this season, UMES finished third with a total score of 121 points.
Five Lady Hawks captured victory over two events. Freshman Tanise Edwards (Philadelphia, Pa.) won her first collegiate event along with a personal best jump of 1.65 meters in the high jump. Her mark also achieved the new qualifying standards for the MEAC tournament in February. Four others-sophomore Rachel Halmon (Waldorf, Md.), freshmen Dypna Umunakwe (Bronx, N.Y.) and Aliah Cherry (Waldorf, Md.) and junior Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine's, Jamaica)-won the 4x400 meter relay with a 3:59.52 clip.
Other top performers include sophomore Evelyn Chappell (Bowie, Md.), who finished the highest among Hawks with her third place time of 7.89 seconds in the 60 meter dash, and Hemley's third place run in the 500 meters at 1:18.60. Sophomore Barbora Blahutova (Slavkov, Czech Republic) also received a third place time, running 5:16.73 in the mile.
In the field events, sophomore Shauntel Lucius (Newark, N.J.) finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 11.22 meters, and senior Nancy Yao (Riverdale, Md.) was right behind her in third with a distance of 11.06 meters. Sophomore Alexis Dailey (Huntingtown, Md.) continued her strong season with a pair of second place marks, hurling the shot put for 12.30 meters and slinging the weight throw at a distance of 15.27 meters.
Navy won the meet overall with a score of 164. They were followed by Delaware (150), UMES (121), James Madison (102), Mount St. Mary's (57) and Holy Cross (4).
After the men also travel to Navy on Saturday, the entire team will head to New York City to participate in the Gotham Cup on January 16th.
