COLOMBIA, Mo. - The Hawks hope to be flying higher tonight then they were when they opened the 2015-2016 basketball season on Friday. UMES suffered an 80-53 setback it the first game of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic. On the other side of the tournament, Missouri opened with an 83-74 win over Wofford. Tonight's match-up, broadcast live on the SEC network at 6:00 p.m., will be a chance for the Hawks to right the ship.
"I think we will get it together," said head coach Bobby Collins after the Kansas State loss. "I am kind of pleased with my team and we will be a force to be reckoned with in the future."
UMES did a lot right in the season opener, especially defensively, but turnovers plagued the Collins coached team and shots just didn't fall as the Hawks shot just under 30-percent from the floor. They also shot as many free throws as K-State made, so Collins hopes having his regular compliment of players on the floor for significant minutes will help with some offensive continuity.
"One thing I know that we can do-in our first scrimmage we dropped 17 or 18 three's, so we can shoot the ball. Ryan Andino is a prolific three-point shooter and [Friday night] he was 1-for-7. We kind of feed off of him knocking down shots for us and [Friday] that just did not happen."
UMES will lean again on senior stars Devin Martin and Dominique Elliott. Martin had a team high 18 points. "They both gave us some stability even though [Elliott] did not score a lot. We really depend on him. Our offense goes through him and he really is a problem when he gets the ball down in the post."
The Hawks face a Missouri team who is running an up-tempo offense, who, in scoring 83 on Friday night, tallied their highest point total since March of 2014. Their roster features just one player, Ryan Rosburg, who is taller than 6-8 and he is also the biggest at 236 lbs., so the Hawks figure to pound the ball inside. If they can slow down the Tigers and keep in the game in the 50s or 60s, UMES stands a good chance to upset the SEC team.
Tip-off live on the SEC Network is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET.
