Feb. 24, 2015 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball senior Mike Myers has been named to the group of 32 finalists for Mid-Major Player of the Year on CollegeCourtReport.com. Fans can vote for Myers in a bracket-style tournament, with the first round taking place until Sunday, March 1.
This is the first annual Mid-Major Player of the Year Award, presented by CollegeCourtReport.com. The 32 finalists square off in one-on-one voting contests to determine the final 16 candidates. After five rounds of voting, each lasting one week, CollegeCourtReport will announce a winner for Mid-Major Player of the Year on Monday, March 30. Voting takes place at www.collegecourtreport.com/ccr-mm-poy.html.
Myers currently leads UMES in both scoring (16.1 points per game) and rebounding (7.1 rebounds per game). Among MEAC players, Myers ranks in the top eight in both categories, as well as ranking third in the league with a 59.7% field goal percentage. The forward is second in the NCAA in free throw attempts with 263 foul shots in 29 games, an average of 9.1 free throws per contest. The Camden, N.J. native has won conference awards for MEAC Player of the Week and MEAC Defensive Player of the Week during the season. The senior was also named to the Midseason Watch List for the Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award, a separate distinction recognizing the nation's top mid-major performers.
Back in November, CollegeCourtReport held a similar competition to determine the nation's top mascot. With the support of Hawks fans, Harry T. Hawk was named the best mascot in the NCAA. Now, the UMES faithful have another chance to display their Hawk Pride in support of Myers, in his quest to be Mid-Major Player of the Year.
