March 2, 2015 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior track & field thrower Dillon Simon (Roseau, Dominica) and sophomore women's basketball guard Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) were named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on March 2nd. McCoy is being named for the first time this season, while Simon is being named for the second time this season.
Simon did this weekend what he has done numerous times in his career as a Hawk-he reset the record in the men's shot put. At the Boston Last Chance Meet on Sunday, Simon hurled the shot put for a distance of 19.30 meters, beating his old top mark of 19.22 meters set earlier this year. Currently, the UMES senior ranks 17th among NCAA Division I participants, just one spot out of the field of 16 that will head to Arkansas in a couple weeks. Among IC4A/ECAC qualifiers, he currently ranks third.
McCoy found her stride in a crucial conference matchup against the Delaware State Hornets. After a five point, four rebound effort in the first half, McCoy led her team to victory from beyond the arc. In the end she went 4-for-6 from three point range and 6-for-10 overall with a total of 16 points. McCoy also ended the game with five boards, third most on the team, along with two steals and an assist. While she averages 5.1 points per game this year, McCoy has reached double figures twice in the last four contests.
Simon will get one last opportunity to make the NCAA Championships at the IC4A/ECAC Championships in Boston next weekend, while McCoy and the Lady Hawks will wrap up their regular season Thursday at home against Morgan State.
