PRINCESS ANNE, Md.-- In nearly two weeks away from the diamond, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team returned home to face Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe South Carolina State (SC State). The squads split their doubleheader bout at Hawks Field. UMES blanked the Lady Bulldogs in game one, 3-0, but fell in the nightcap, 14-4.
As a result, the Lady Hawks moved to 5-23 overall whereas SC State went to 8-20 on the season.
Game one saw a pitching duel between UMES' Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) and South Carolina State's Kierra Cromer. Cromer gave her club an opportunity to win; however, the California-native was on-fire. Guerra threw her seventh-career complete game while tossing a shutout. She went seven innings with 10 K's in the victory.
Offensively, the Lady Hawks recorded three runs on 10 hits. Newcomer Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) went a perfect 3-of-3 with two doubles. Juniors Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) and Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) each registered two hits in the win.
UMES got on the board first with a RBI-single from Nash, 1-0. In the second, Allison Anderson doubled to left center and increased the lead, 2-0. After three consecutive scoreless innings, Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.) added another run with a RBI-double; thus, driving home Abria Tinsley (Sewell, N.J.) and giving Maryland Eastern Shore a 3-0 victory.
For the Lady Bulldogs, Cromer pitched six innings and allowed three runs in a losing effort.
In game two, the Lady Hawks had another solid performance offensively. UMES manufactured four runs on eight hits, but stranded six base runners. Anderson went 2-of-3 from the plate whereas Tesharra Hill (Chatsworth, Calif.) drove in two runs in the loss.
Trailing, 1-0, Maryland Eastern Shore responded with four runs on five hits to take the lead after one, 4-1. Next inning, SC State capitalized on multiple UMES miscues and tied the contest, 4-4.
After a scoreless third inning, the Lady Bulldogs got hot. South Carolina State posted five runs on seven hits in the inning and took a five-run advantage after four innings of play, 9-4. SC State's late surge continued as they tallied another five runs in the fifth, capped off by a two-run blast from the Lady Bulldogs' Kahla Caster. UMES dropped game two, 14-4.
For South Carolina State, they produced 14 runs on 18 hits. Caster led the way, going a perfect 4-of-4 with a game-high three RBIs in the victory.
On April 18-19, the Lady Hawks resume conference play as the Hampton Lady Pirates come to town. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. while Sunday's, seven-inning game starts at noon.
