INTRODUCING THE NEW MEMBERS OF UMES VOLLEYBALL: QUI'YONA SALMON

July 14, 2015

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Eight new athletes will be on the volleyball court this coming fall, each contributing in a variety of positions and hailing from many regions of the United States and several European countries.

For the next few Tuesdays and Thursdays, UMES athletics will reveal another new recruit who will don the Maroon and Gray this season. Next up is freshman Qui'Yona Salmon (Coconut Creek, Fla.).

"An athlete isn't made of muscle-an athlete is made of heart. When you step on the court, you become a warrior and the court is yours." Salmon said. "I plan on leading my team to a MEAC Championship. I like Coach Rens because he is very honest and tells it like it is."

Salmon comes up the Atlantic coast from Magic City, residing in the Miami suburb of Coconut Creek. She played volleyball exceptionally for Monarch High School, raking 135 kills and an impressive .431 hit percentage while also contributing 97 blocks. Those efforts earned Salmon All-County honors from Broward County, and helped the Knights to a 22-5 record and a place in the Class 8A Regional Semifinals.

Additionally, Salmon competed with the Ocean Breeze Volleyball Club. She will join the Hawks as a middle blocker and will make an offensive impact while on the floor.

"Qui'Yona has a vast amount of potential as a volleyball player," Hawks coach Toby Rens said of his new middle blocker. I'm really looking forward to working with her and helping her develop as a player and person. Her focus and drive as a player makes everything seem so effortless. Hawk fans are going to love her passion for the game, winning personality, athleticism and her team first attitude."
