Jan. 11, 2016 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Indoor track senior thrower Rico Duncan (Cheverly, Md.) and junior jumper/hurdler Shelasia Leitch (Newark, N.J.) were named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 10th. Both athletes are being named for the first time this year.
Both athletes enjoyed nice weekends at the Villanova Open at the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Complex on Staten Island this past Friday. Duncan's finest moment came in the weight throw, winning that event and beating out 15 other athletes with a toss of 15.71 meters.
Leitch was even more impressive, starting with her 5.46 meter performance in the long jump, placing her fifth. She had an even better day in the 60 meter hurdles, blazing past her competition to take first in both the preliminaries and the finals. Her prelims time was slightly faster, clocking in at 8.76 seconds.
Overall the Lady Hawks finished runners-up to the hosts, Villanova, while the men captured third place.
The UMES track team will be back in Ocean Breeze this Saturday for the Great Dane Classic. A 10:00a.m. start time is scheduled for the meet.
