Hawks face third challenge of road trip in Louisiana Tech

Nov. 27, 2016

RUSTON, Louisiana -

Five games into the season and two games into a 4-game, 13-day road swing covering more than 4,500 miles, Maryland Eastern Shore faces its next challenge Sunday at Louisiana Tech (2-2).

LA Tech - which won 23 games a season ago - features four players averaging double figures in scoring. It all starts with a pair in the paint where redshirt senior Erik McCree (6-foot-8, 225 pounds) averages 13.5 points and 5.5 rebounds. Junior Omar Sherman (6-9, 255) is averaging 12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and a block per contest.

Freshman guard Jalen Harris is averaging 11.3 points and 3.3 rebounds, while junior Jacobi Boykins puts up 11 points and grabs 2.5 boards.

Sophomore point guard Derric Jean, who averages 9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists, played behind Conference USA Player of the Year Alex Hamilton last season, but stepped into the starting lineup upon his graduation.

The Hawks have only faced the Bulldogs once in the history of the two programs.

That meeting came on Nov. 25, 2011 in Laramie, Wyoming as part of the Jim Thorpe Classic. The 'Dogs defeated the Hawks 73-54 in the first game of the tournament.

This time, the game will be played in the Thomas Assembly Center where the 'Dogs have seen big success over the last five years. Since February of 2012, LA Tech has a 67-2 record at the friendly confines - the .971 winning percentage is tops in Division I over that period. Stephen F. Austin 65-2 (.970), Kansas 70-3 (.959) and Wichita State 69-3 (.958) are the next three teams on that list.

Eastern Shore has three players averaging double figures in scoring, including Bakari Copeland (13.8), Ryan Andino (12.4) and Logan McIntosh (12.0).

Copeland had a rough time of it at Wichita State where he scored just six points and against at Colorado State with 15 points, but finishing 5-of-16 from the field. His career-high 13 rebounds came earlier this season at home in a loss to University of Maryland Baltimore County and the Hawks will need him on the glass against the Bulldogs.

Games can be heard locally on Fox Sports Radio 960 AM WTGM or on www.EasternShoreHawks.com. Will DeBoer will have the call Sunday (Nov. 27) at 5 p.m. eastern on the Hawks Sports Radio Network.
