Feb. 14, 2016 PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland - The last time the University of Maryland Eastern Shore tangled with James Daniel III and the Howard Bison (10-15, 4-6 MEAC), the Hawks were in a midst of a four-game win streak. The ESPNU showdown played out as an 85-67 win for the maroon and gray that became number three in that streak.
Daniel still managed to score 28 points in the loss and currently still leads NCAA Division I in scoring at 27.4 points per game. On Tuesday, Daniel will become all-time leading scorer in Bison history with just seven points -- breaking a record that stood for 50 years.
The Hawks (8-18, 5-6 MEAC) can afford to give up the milestone as long as they don't give up the win. After dropping consecutive decisions to Norfolk State and Delaware State, Eastern Shore has fallen to seventh in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference standings and have just two more wins than the last place Hornets in a top-heavy conference.
With just five games remaining before the MEAC Tournament, Maryland Eastern Shore would benefit from not only moving up in the standings, but also developing some momentum to close.
Howard has dropped five straight including three more since the Feb. 1 loss at the William P. Hytche Center.
While Daniels isn't the only weapon for the Bison, the Hawks did a good job in the last meeting of making sure he was the only one who really hurt them. It took him 18 shots to score 28, and Kofi Andoh added 14 points and six rebounds, while Marcel Boyd had 13 points and 10 boards. Four Bison accounted all but three of their 67 points.
Maryland Eastern Shore struggled to defend in the second half at Delaware State on Saturday allowing the Hornets to shoot 64 percent after the break to pull out the win.
Howard was buried by Coppin State on Saturday 90-66, but Daniel had 28 points.
Senior co-captain Devin Martin (Baltimore, Maryland) leads the Hawks in scoring with 16.7 points per game to go with 4.5 boards, but struggled Monday going 2-of-14 from the field. Classmate and co-captain Dominique Elliott (Savannah, Georgia) is averaging 13.8 points and 7.7 rebounds and has put up a double-double in three of his last four games.
Bakari Copeland (Decatur, Georgia) averages 10.0 points and 4.2 rebounds, while sophomore Ryan Andino (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) and Dontae Caldwell (Los Angeles, California) average 5.8 points each.
After Howard, the Hawks return home for a three-game stretch that begins against South Carolina State on Feb. 20, at 4 p.m. All are the second half of a men's and women's doubleheader.
All games can be heard locally on Fox Sports Radio 960 AM WTGM or on www.umeshawks.com. Brendan Gulick and David Byrd will have the call from Burr Gymnasium on the Hawks Sports Radio Network.
