Feb. 25, 2016 PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland -
Saturday is an important game for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. It's Senior Day and that brings all the emotion and hoopla of honoring a pair of senior co-captains in Devin Martin (Baltimore, Maryland) and Dominique Elliott (Savannah, Georgia).
But it's also the penultimate game of the regular season with the Hawks languishing on a five-game losing streak and a matchup with bitter rival Delaware State.
With the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament on the horizon (March 7-12), Maryland Eastern Shore will have just this matchup with the Hornets (7-21, 5-8 MEAC) and then the regular season finale, Feb. 3, at Morgan State (7-20, 5-9) to get on track for the postseason.
Delaware State won the previous meeting 75-71 earlier this season.
When the two teams last met on Feb. 13 in Dover, it was DeAndre Haywood who led the way for the Hornets (24 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists), but he's not normally the team's most dangerous threat.
That honor is reserved for freshman point guard Devin Morgan, who leads the team in scoring (11.8 ppg.) rebounding (3.3), assists (2.8) and 3-pointers made (58).
The Hornets ran off two more victories after beating the Hawks at home before losing to Hampton at Home of Feb. 22. They have won six of their last 10 games.
The Hawks (8-21, 5-9 MEAC) lost 81-80 in double overtime to Florida A&M on Monday.
Martin leads the Hawks in scoring at 17.2 points per game, is second in rebounds with 4.6 per game, second in assists at 2.1 per game and leads the team in 3-pointers with 66.
Elliott is averaging 14.4 points and a team-high 8 rebounds. He has posted nine double-doubles this season including six of his last 10 games.
After the home finale, the Hawks will finish out the regular season on the road at Morgan State on March 3 at 7:30 p.m. All games are the second half of a men's and women's doubleheader.
All games can be heard locally on Fox Sports Radio 960 AM WTGM or on www.umeshawks.com. Brendan Gulick and David Byrd will have the call Saturday from the William P. Hytche Athletic Center on the Hawks Sports Radio Network.
