Hawks finish up regular season at Morgan State

March 2, 2016

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland -

Fresh off a senior night win in its home finale, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is looking to head into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament next week playing well.

The Hawks (9-21, 6-9 MEAC) will finish out the regular season at Morgan State on Thursday (March 3) at 7:30 p.m. and are currently in a three-way tie for seventh place in the MEAC, with the Bears and North Carolina A&T, but lose the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Aggies.

Maryland Eastern Shore will be looking for big output from Dominique Elliott (Savannah, Georgia), who was co-MEAC Player of the Week for last week after averaging 19.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals in a double overtime loss to Florida A&M and a win against Delaware State. Elliott is averaging 14.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and has posted nine double-doubles this season including six of his last 11 games.

Senior co-captain Devin Martin (Baltimore, Maryland), who missed the last game with an injury, leads the team in scoring at 17.2 points per game, second in assists at 2.1 per game, leads the team in 3-pointers with 66 and chips in 4.6 rebounds a contest.

The third piece to the puzzle for the Hawks this season has been Junior JUCO transfer Bakari Copeland (Decatur, Georgia), who averages 10 points and 4.3 rebounds a game, but struggled last time out with just five points.

Against Delaware State, the Hawks saw Ryan Andino (Fort Lauderdale, Florida), Thomas Rivera (Harlem, New York) and Derrico Peck (Atlanta, Georgia) all reached double digits in scoring. Peck could be the X-factor for the Hawks after a strong overall showing against the Hornets.

The victory against Delaware State stopped a five-game losing skid for the Hawks that had started on Feb. 8 at home against Norfolk State.

Thursday will be Senior Night for Morgan State (9-19, 6-9 MEAC) with several Bears playing in their final home game at Hill Field House. Morgan State will honor four senior student-athletes Cedric Blossom, Rasean Simpson, Donte Pretlow and Andrew Hampton.

Blossom has scored double figures in 17 of the 23 games he's played this season and is currently the Bears' leading scorer by averaging 14.9 ppg. (ranks No. 10 in MEAC). The starting forward is shooting 49 percent from the field (ranks No. 7 in MEAC), has converted 81-of-123 (.659) free throws and is averaging 6.7 rebounds per game.

MSU will square off against UMES for the 86th meeting in history between the two schools.

The last matchup was at the Hytche Athletic Center on Jan. 11. Martin and Elliott sparked a 9-0 run to lead Maryland Eastern Shore's comeback in the final 7 minutes to beat Morgan State 69-65. Martin led the way by scoring 16 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to lead UMES to its first conference win of the season. Blossom scored 17 points (8-11 FG) and Phillip Carr added 16 to lead the Bears.

The MEAC Tournament will begin on Monday, March 7, at Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia.

All games can be heard locally on Fox Sports Radio 960 AM WTGM or on www.umeshawks.com. Brendan Gulick will have the call Thursday from Hill Field House on the Hawks Sports Radio Network.
