MATCHUP PREVIEW
Earlier this season, the Lady Hawks defeated Coppin State twice at the North Carolina A&T Aggie Invitational.
UMES took the first game, 10-3, and ended a 21-game skid against their in-state rival, which dated back to the 2009 season. Nine different Hawks recorded a hit in the victory, led by sophomore Tesharra Hill (Chatsworth, Calif.) and freshman Sara Jo Whaley (Laurel, Del.) each registering two hits and totaled five RBIs.
In the second game, Maryland Eastern Shore rallied from behind to take down the Eagles, 11-6. Five Hawks had multi-hit performances, led by junior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and senior Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.). Anderson produced three hits while Gomez tied a career-high with five RBIs.
Since then, Coppin State (0-15, 0-3 MEAC) remains in search for the first victory of the season. First-year head coach Gino Olivieri looks to get the Eagles in the win column after a tough conference opener at Norfolk State. Senior Danielle Smith guides the attack, averaging a .300 batting average against the Spartans. In the circle, Melanie Benge leads the club in innings pitched (39.2) and strikeouts (24).
For Maryland Eastern Shore (6-15, 1-2 MEAC), they look to keep the bats going as they are hitting .289 as a team in league play. Four Lady Hawks are batting .400 or better, led by Hitch. The Delaware-native has five hits, including three doubles, with a .833 (5-of-6) average. Brown is second on the club (.444) with two RBIs. On the season, sophomore pitcher Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) leads the team with innings pitched (77.0), 54 strikeouts (54), and wins (4).
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
On April 2-3, the Lady Hawks return home to meet Norfolk State in a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader begins 1 p.m. and Sunday's seven-inning contest starts at noon.
