PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland -

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore fell behind early in its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference home opener against Howard, holding the lead just once in the first half, 6-4, and trailed by 11 at the break.

The Shore fought back in the second half, but fell 74-66.

The Hawks (4-14, 1-2 MEAC) chopped an 18-point second-half lead down to just four (64-60) after a Logan McIntosh (Atlanta, Georgia) layup with 3:56 to go.

But the Hawks turned the ball over once and missed nine field goals and a free throw over the final four minutes, while Howard clung to the lead.

Senior Bakari Copeland (Decatur, Georgia) led all scorers with 19 points on 5-of-13 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds for his fourth career double-double.

Sophomore Isaac Taylor (Wachapreague, Virginia) chipped in 10 points in 21 minutes.

Junior Logan McIntosh (Atlanta, Georgia) got into early foul trouble, but finished with 16 points and five rebounds - including 14 points in the second half.

Howard (4-13, 1-1 MEAC), was playing without 2015-16 MEAC Player of the Year James Daniels because of an ankle injury and was down to just eight scholarship players due to other injuries.

But it was helped by double-digit scoring by three different players including 17 from freshman William Charles and 16 by James Miller.

The rebounding battle was dead even, 40-40, while the Hawks forced the shorthanded Bison into 16 turnovers, while coughing it up 10 times. Maryland Eastern Shore shot 32 percent from the field and 11 percent (2-of-19) from behind the arc. Howard hit 52 percent of its field goals and was 5-of-15 (33 percent) from 3.
