Hawks to Face New-Look Hoyas in D.C.

Nov. 17, 2017

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland -

Kicking off a five-game, 11-day road trip, Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball heads to our nation's capital to take on Georgetown on Saturday afternoon. Tip time from Capital One Arena is set for 12 noon.

Last Time Out

A shorthanded Eastern Shore found itself on the short end of a 96-43 decision at Maryland on Sunday night. Cameron Bacote followed up a 28-point debut with 18 points to lead the Hawks, who only dressed nine players for the game. Ahmad Frost and Tyler Jones each had seven points.

Bobby Collins on the Matchup

"They have a brand new coach [Patrick Ewing], I have a brand new team, so we're even. I hope that we can make it a game, I would love to make it a game, and I would like to see them make adjustments. He hasn't had to make any adjustments thus far because he's beaten the teams he's played pretty well. I just hope that we can make it interesting and give ourselves a chance, and for me to get a chance to coach in the game."

Series History

Georgetown has won all seven previous matchups in this series that began in 1975. The Hawks dropped a 68-49 decision to the Hoyas at the then-Verizon Center back on Dec. 1, 2015. Ryan Andino notched 16 points off the bench to lead Eastern Shore, while Devin Martin and Dominique Elliott combined for 23.

Hawk Quick Shots

Wednesday's scheduled game at St. Bonaventure was postponed due to a campus-wide power failure. Representatives from both schools rescheduled the game for Monday at 7 p.m. The schedule adjustment forced the Hawks to adjust their travel plans. Eastern Shore will now spend 11 straight days on the road, playing five games in four destinations. The Hawks will fly from Georgetown to St. Bonaventure, then head south to Niceville, Florida for the two-day Emerald Coast Classic before swinging back through Old Dominion on Nov. 27.

Senior guard Logan McIntosh (back) missed Sunday's game against the Terrapins. He is day-to-day. Freshman forward Miryne Thomas (concussion) was slated to start against the Bonnies on Wednesday night before the lights went out. He is expected to make his collegiate debut on Saturday afternoon.

Preseason All-MEAC second-team guard Ryan Andino announced last Saturday that he intends to redshirt this season after dealing with a shoulder injury. The senior guard and 2015 MEAC Rookie of the Year expects to return to the program in 2018-19. He is one of three projected preseason starters (Dontae Caldwell, Isaac Taylor) who will miss the entire 2017-18 campaign.

About Georgetown

Georgetown is coming off two straight losing seasons for the first time since 1972 and '73. The Hoyas fired longtime head coach John Thompson III, bringing in the legendary Patrick Ewing and a new administration. Georgetown is going after its first NCAA Tournament bid since 2015, when they lost to Utah in the Round of 32.

Junior center Jessie Govan bullied opponents around the paint in his first two games of the season. The New Yorker went for 20 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocks in a win over Jacksonville on Sunday and followed it up with a 20-point, 14-board effort against Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday. Govan averaged 10.1 points and 5.0 rebounds last season; the year before, he made the All-Big East Freshman Team with 6.8 points, 4.1 boards, and a block per contest.

Patrick Ewing took Georgetown basketball to stratospheric heights in the '80s, leading the Hoyas to three title games and the 1984 National Championship. After a Hall-of-Fame professional career that saw him named one of the 50 best NBA players of all-time, Ewing served as an assistant for four NBA teams over 15 years, most recently as associate head coach for the Charlotte Hornets. Ewing returns to his alma mater, where he was a three-time consensus All-American, for his first head coaching gig.
