LANDOVER, Maryland - After two days at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships, the Maryland Eastern Shore men's track & field team stand in fourth place with 33.5 points scored while the women enter the final day in eighth place with 18 points.
For the women, 11 of the team's 16 points Friday came in the weight throw. It was freshman Sierra Adams (Silverdale, Washington) led the way with a new personal record of 17.04 meters to come in second place and tally eight points. Junior Regyn Davis-Young (Lanham, Maryland) took seventh with a distance of 15.58 meters to earn two points, and senior Donisha Porter (Aberdeen, Maryland) came in eighth with a personal record of 15.46 meters. Junior Nicovia Carter (Upper Marlboro, Maryland) did not contribute to the team's total, but she heads home with a new personal record of 15.06 meters.
Senior Jennaya Hield (Freeport, Bahamas) was an active participation in the remaining five points scored by the Hawk women. She individually finished fifth in the 800m run with a time of 2:14.34, then helped run the final leg of the distance medley relay. The quartet of freshman Neus Quinonero (Valencia, Spain), junior Alicia Colson (Lanham, Maryland, sophomore Lenneisha Gilbert (Miami, Florida) and Hield ran the DMR with a time of 13:22.54 to place eighth.
The men's DMR team also had an excellent showing, winning the event and setting a school record with a time of 9:58.50. It was a foursome that has been accustomed to running this race well-junior Oussama Chouati (Manresa, Spain), senior Taj Showalter (Anchorage, Alaska), sophomore Jordan Leon (Baltimore, Maryland) and senior Khalil Rmidi Kinini (Malaga, Spain).
Freshman Noah Agwu (Wilmington, Delaware) had a strong showing in his first MEAC tournament with his third place mark of 16.40 meters and six points in the weight throw. Agwu's distance is also a personal record. Senior Kevin Stanford (Salisbury, Maryland) also hit a new PR of 2.00 meters in the high jump, tying for eighth to secure one half of a point. Showalter rounded out the scoring with an 8.23 second performance in the 60 meter hurdles to take eighth place.
Two other noteworthy events came in short distance races. Senior Shellasia Leitch (Newark, New Jersey) earned qualification to the 60 meter hurdles finals and freshman Joshua Dacres (Yorktown Heights, New York) reached a new PR in the 60 meter dash.
Entering the final day, the men's team is 10.5 points back of the frontrunners from Norfolk State. The women are trailing Florida A&M, who lead the field with 55 points.
Championship Saturday begins at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning, and ESPN3 will provide online coverage beginning at one in the afternoon.
