PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team is looking for its first win of the season as they travel to Denton, TX to face the University of North Texas on Saturday (Nov. 17).
The Hawks (0-3) dropped their home opener Tuesday (Nov. 13) against Longwood University 66-63. Eastern Shore was able to get four players in double figures against the Lancers – AJ Cheeseman (Snellville, GA), Ahmad Frost (Cincinnati, OH), Ryan Andino (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) and Tyler Jones (Atlantic City, NJ) – and the game saw point guard Bryan Urrutia (Chihuahua, Mexico) dish out 10 assists.
Maryland Eastern Shore forced 16 turnovers versus Longwood as the Hawks continued their strong defensive play early in the season. The Hawks are forcing an average of 16.3 turnovers per game through three games.
While the Hawks are looking for win number one, North Texas has yet to face defeat in the 2018-19 season. The Mean Green are 5-0 in the early part of the season, including being champions of the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic in Hawaii earlier this month. Balance has been the calling card for North Texas as they have five players averaging double figures in scoring and seven players with more than 100 minutes played this season.
The contest will also include familiar faces to the Eastern Shore of Maryland on the UNT side. North Texas senior guard Jorden Duffy is an alum of Bennett High School in Salisbury. On the sideline, one of the Mean Green's assistant coaches is Jareem Dowling. Dowling played basketball at Maryland Eastern Shore from 2003-2005 before graduating with a degree in sociology.
Saturday's game can be heard locally on Fox Sports 960 AM WTGM and online at EasternShoreHawks.com. Pregame coverage will begin at 5:45 p.m. with Will DeBoer on The Shore Sports Network.
Following Saturday's game, the Hawks will travel to Macon, GA to face Mercer University on Tuesday (Nov. 20). Eastern Shore will return home after that to face Central Penn next Saturday (Nov. 24).
