SALISBURY, Maryland - For the first four innings, Maryland Eastern Shore and La Salle battled to a 1-1 tie. But after that the breaks went the way of the Explorers, who defeated the Hawks 12-1 in their home opener Tuesday (Feb. 27) at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Junior Dominic DeBlasie (Tilton, New Hampshire) was The Shore's best performer at the plate. He ended the day a perfect 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and the team's lone RBI. DeBlasie's single with two outs in the fourth to score freshman Avery Tunnell (Dover, Delaware).

Senior Toby Hoskins (North East, Maryland) took the bump in his second start of the season. The team's opening day starter earned a solid start of two run ball over five innings with four strikeouts, but ultimately took the loss.

Other top performances included two hits from senior Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin) and scoreless relief appearances from senior Chris Melrath (Rising Sun, Maryland) and freshman Brian Cordell (Pasadena, Maryland).

La Salle scored first with a run in the opening frame. DeBlasie's single tied the score in the fourth but the Explorers capitalized on a three error inning for the Hawks to retake the lead, 3-1. They would go onto score nine runs over three innings to secure the win.

Maryland Eastern Shore travels to George Washington Wednesday (Feb. 28) to battle the Colonials. They'll return home Saturday and Sunday (Mar. 3-4) for a four game series against Lafayette.
