SALISBURY, Maryland -- Senior Evan Bertone (Douglas, Massachusetts) earned his first win of the season in a complete game, four hit shutout. His performance propelled the Hawks to a doubleheader split with the Coppin State Eagles. The Shore's 1-0 win came in game two, as the Eagles won the first game by a 12-2 score.
Bertone scattered four hits, two walks and two hit batters with four strikeouts. Along the way he battled through tight situations, including two runners on in the fifth and holding a runner at third with one out in the sixth.
The shutout win was the first for the Hawks since April 25, 2015, when Tanner Whiteman blanked the Norfolk State Spartans.
Senior Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin) singled to lead off the game, stole second and third, then scored on a groundout by junior Joey Nicastro (New Market, Maryland) for the game's only run.
The victory leveled the doubleheader, after Coppin State took the opener. Nicastro tallied three hits in the first game and freshman Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) added two hits with an RBI. Senior Toby Hoskins (North East, Maryland) went 4 2/3 innings with two earned runs but ultimately took the loss. Fellow senior Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Virginia) added an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Maryland Eastern Shore improves to 2-15 (1-1 MEAC) while Coppin State improves to 2-12-1 (1-1 MEAC).
The squads will meet for the rubber match Sunday (Mar. 18) at noon inside Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
