Hoskins' shutout helps Hawks win series over Hornets

March 31, 2018

SALISBURY, Maryland - Senior pitcher Toby Hoskins (North East, Maryland) delivered the first complete game shutout of his Hawk career as Maryland Eastern Shore earned a series win over Delaware State in a doubleheader split Saturday (Mar. 31) at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Hoskins put forward a gutsy performance, weaving around seven Hornet hits and a pair of walks to earn the shutout. Though he managed to work his own way out of most situations, sophomore Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey) came up big with a pivotal outfield assist in the sixth. Marshall nailed the Hornets' Miguel Rivera at the plate to thwart a rally effort by Delaware State.

Marshall also tallied The Shore's lone RBI of the game off a first inning double. That play was set up by a key error in center field by the Hornets that gave the Hawks their only runs of the game.

With the shutout, Hoskins improves his ERA to 3.46 and picked up his second win this season.

Maryland Eastern Shore (6-22, 4-5 MEAC) came back to win the series after dropping the opener of Saturday's doubleheader, 8-5. In that game, freshman Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) and senior Jessey Valdez (Dorchester, Massachusetts) earned multi-hit efforts. Junior Jordan Turner (Baltimore, Maryland) was effective with 2 2/3 innings of relief, but took a hard luck loss thanks to an unearned run.

Despite the loss, The Shore rallied after Delaware State (3-23, 1-8 MEAC) got off to a 5-0 start. Thanks to walks, errors and timely hitting the Hawks put up five combined runs in the third and fourth on just three hits. A sacrifice fly in the seventh proved the difference as the Hornets picked up their first conference win.

The Hawks' schedule moves into April with two non-conference games this week. The Shore travels to UMBC Tuesday (Apr. 3) before hosting Georgetown Wednesday (Apr. 4).
