SALISBURY, Maryland - In the third weekend meeting this season, Maryland Eastern Shore battled Norfolk State at Perdue Stadium. And for the third time this year the Spartans took both games in the Saturday (Apr. 28) doubleheader.
Norfolk State took the first game 11-6 after building a large early lead. The Spartans then came back in the night cap, scoring five runs in the sixth to win 5-4.
Maryland Eastern Shore falls to 9-34 (5-15 MEAC) while Norfolk State improves to 15-13 (12-8 MEAC).
Freshman Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) collected two hits in each game and added a pair of RBI's in game two. Fellow freshman and Pasadena resident Brian Cordell punched home two runs in the first game, and senior Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin) also earned a multi hit game in the opener.
On the mound, sophomore Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey) went five innings and pitched masterfully until the Spartans' comeback in game two.
A pair of five run innings by the Spartans doomed the Hawks in each contest. It came in the second inning of game one as Norfolk State blasted two home runs to pull away early. The Shore built up a 4-0 lead in the second affair, including three in the fifth thanks to clutch hits by Oxyer and junior Dominic DeBlasie (Tilton, New Hampshire). But in the sixth the Spartans pulled ahead then fended off the Hawks to earn a doubleheader sweep.
The Hawks and Spartans will meet in the 2018 home finale Sunday (Apr. 29). First pitch is at noon but fans are encouraged to arrive early for senior day festivies prior to the start.
