Defense Shines in Hawks Sweep of SC State

Eastern Shore Returns Home To Face Delaware State Oct. 15

ORANGEBURG, South Carolina — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team got production across the board to grab a 3-0 (25-20, 25-12 and 25-21) conference win at South Carolina State on Friday (Oct. 11).

"It feels good to come here and get a win," head coach Trevor Callarman said. "It is tough to take a nine hour bus ride in the middle of conference play to come here and play but it was a cool experience for us and we were able to win."

The Hawks (7-13, 2-3 MEAC) came out aggressive from the beginning and gained control early. Junior Anica Jestratijevic (Arandjelovac, Serbia) had a strong showing on the service line in the first set to help catapult Eastern Shore in front as sophomore Mauri Carver (Elizabeth City, North Carolina) would get a kill to end the frame.

Maryland Eastern Shore controlled set two from the outset. Junior Tatjana Trifkovic (Belgrade, Serbia) ended the set with a kill to give the Hawks a 2-0 advantage. In the final set, SCSU got an early lead before the Hawks would respond and pull away late and get a kill from sophomore Alexis Lee (Wilmington, Delaware) to end the match.

Senior Ivana Blazevic (Zagreb, Croatia) had 30 assists, six kills and three aces. Carver and fellow middle blocker senior Lidia Chery (Garfield, New Jersey) each had strong matches defensively and offensively. Carver finished with seven block assists and six kills. Chery also had six kills, a solo block and two block assists.

"Mauri and Lidia had a good night with their blocking," Callarman said. "They did a good job of being aggressive at the net and I think that helped lead to a good team win."

The Shore will now return home to face Delaware State on Tuesday (Oct. 15). The Hawks will be celebrating breast cancer awareness during that match and ask all fans to wear pink to the match to show their support.
