Hawks Outlast Wildcats in Four Sets

One Hour Delay Halted Match during Set Two

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team stopped their three-match skid on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 27) as they defeated the Bethune-Cookman University Wildcats 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17).

The Hawks came out strong to start the match. They held the lead for most of the first set and an error from BCU ended the frame.

In set two, Maryland Eastern Shore was still in control and held a 23-20 lead after Stella Johnson (Newport News, Virginia) got an ace. A Wildcat player slipped and fell on the play and play was suspended after that for over an hour. The Shore would come out after the delay and get the last two points of the set to take a 2-0 lead.

"During the delay we just kept talking to the girls about the next point," head coach Trevor Callarman said. "It was good to see them execute right after the long wait because it's tough to get back started after something like that."

Bethune-Cookman responded to win the third set despite an early lead for the Hawks in the frame. The Shore would dominate after that. They led throughout the final set and sophomore Alexis Lee (Wilmington, Delaware) would get a kill to end the match.

Eastern Shore finished with four players in double figures for digs. Johnson led the way with 21 digs. She also had four aces. Lee led the squad with 19 kills. Juniors Ilina Spasova (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Tatjana Trifkovic (Belgrade, Serbia) each had a double-double. Spasova had 11 kills and 15 digs, while Trifkovic finished with 13 kills and 13 digs.

The Shore will now face their route 13 rival Delaware State on Friday (Nov. 1). The Hornets are currently one game ahead of the Hawks in the MEAC Northern division.
