PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball will play for the first time in seven days on Sunday evening (Dec. 29) at Virginia Tech against the Hokies.

Eastern Shore (1-13) dropped their last game against the Old Dominion University Monarchs 76-52 on Dec. 22. The Hawks were able to take care of the ball at ODU as they committed just eight turnovers after having 21 against Charlotte on Dec. 19. However, they struggled from the field as they shot 33.9% for the game.

Junior Ty Gibson (Brooklyn, New York) scored his season-high 15 points and dished out four assists versus the Monarchs. His assist total tied his season high as well as he has had four dimes in three games total.

Freshman Da'Shawn Phillip (Baltimore, Maryland) had a big defensive game for The Shore their last time out. He had six blocks and a steal at ODU. That game helped catapult him to being named the MEAC Rookie of the Week for the second time this season on Christmas Eve.

Sunday's opponent, Virginia Tech (9-3), won their last game 64-55 against the Virginia Military Institute on Dec. 21. The Hokies are not ranked in the Top 25 nationally, but did get a win over Michigan State when the Spartans were ranked #3 in the Maui Invitational last month.

The game will also serve as a reunion as former Hawks assistant Adrian "Ace" Custis is the Coordinator of Basketball Relations in Blacksburg. Custis was on the sidelines in Princess Anne for five seasons from 2014-19.

When the calendar moves to 2020, the Hawks will have their sights set on the beginning of MEAC play. The squad will host their first three conference games beginning with a contest against Howard on Jan. 4.
