WACO, Texas — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team fell to the Baylor University Bears 78-46 on Tuesday night (Dec. 3) in their third game in five days.
"Baylor is a great team and their size and athleticism was overwhelming at times," head coach Jason Crafton said. "But I am proud of our guys, especially in the second half, because we moved the basketball and got some good looks."
The Hawks (0-10) found themselves in a 22-3 hole after eight minutes of play. Eastern Shore would respond by outscoring the Bears for the rest of first half to go into the locker room down 38-21. Eight different Hawks scored in the first 20 minutes.
After halftime, Baylor was able to outscore Maryland Eastern Shore 13-6 in the first seven minutes to put some distance between the two teams. The Hawks continued to scrap defensively and played the nationally ranked Bears even for the rest of the contest.
Junior Canaan Bartley (Miami, Fla.) led the Hawks in scoring with 13 points. Junior Ty Gibson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman Kevon Voyles (Berlin, Md.) each finished with eight points. Gibson also had three blocks and a steal. Jared Butler scored a game-high 20 points for Baylor to lead the Bears.
The Shore will now play their second home game of the season on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 8) against Clarks Summit. The home game will be a welcomed site for the Hawks after playing on the road for most of the first month of the season against high major opponents.
"We have gone up against a lot of higher competition early but we have the mentality to keep fighting," Gibson said. "Coach Crafton preaches tenacity to us so we keep that in our mental each night."
