Hawks Open Their 2019 Campaign

Eastern Shore Drops Two in Charleston Southern Tournament

CHARLESTON, South Carolina The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team dropped two games on Friday (Feb. 8) in the Charleston Southern University Tournament. The Hawks fell 14-0 to Dayton and 5-1 to the host Charleston Southern.

Eastern Shore struggled to get things going in their first game of the season against Dayton. The Hawks committed five errors in the game which led to the Flyers scoring seven unearned runs.

Senior Breana Florez (Houston, TX) was the lone Hawk to get a hit in game one. She hit a double to right center in the fifth inning. The other baserunners in the game were senior Daeshia Jones (Teaneck, NJ), who reached on an error, junior Kamryn Lanier (Chester, VA) drew a walk and senior Heidi Smith (Odenton, MD) was hit by a pitch.

In the second game of the day, the Hawks struck first. Sophomore Jordan Robinson (Gaithersburg, MD) hit a single in the first inning and two batters later, Florez also singled and brought home Robinson for the first Maryland Eastern Shore run of the season.

Charleston Southern responded in the bottom of the inning and tied the game. They would hold the Hawks scoreless for the rest of the game, while getting one run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth.

The Shore threatened CSU's lead in the top of the sixth as they were able to load the bases with one out following hits from Stephanie Huff (Montoursville, PA), Florez and Sara Jo Whaley (Laurel, DE). However, the Hawks were not able to capitalize on that opportunity and did not get any baserunners in the final inning either.

Robinson and Florez each had two hits against Charleston Southern. Freshman Anissa Derifield (Woodbridge, VA), along with Huff and Whaley, each had one hit versus CSU.

The Hawks will be back in action tomorrow (Feb. 9) in the Charleston Southern University Tournament at 11:30 am against South Dakota before having another matchup with the host team at 4:30 pm.
