Defense costly as Hawks fall short of sweeping Spartans

Six errors by The Shore propel Norfolk State to 9-6 win

SALISBURY, Maryland — Looking for a sweep, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team made several costly errors in the field. Norfolk State used that to their advantage to win the series finale 9-6 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium Sunday (March 24).

The six errors in total overshadowed a solid pitching performance by Keith Carpenter (Walled Lake, Michigan). In his first career start the redshirt freshman went five strong and allowed no earned runs. Four pitchers combined to surrender just three earned runs, and Andre Bell (Detroit, Michigan) capped it off with a scoreless ninth.

Devynn Hancock (Salisbury, Maryland) led the offensive charge with three RBI's, including a two run single in the ninth to make things interesting. Avery Tunnell (Dover, Delaware) and Peter Jamieson, Jr. (Carlton, Pennsylvania) registered three hits at the plate, with Jamieson adding an RBI along with Nick Roets (Charlotte, North Carolina).

A pair of errors in the third swapped the lead for good as Norfolk State scored three times. Two more errors sparked deja vu in the sixth with another three runs. Insurance in the seventh and eighth put the game out of reach.

For the Spartans, Jonathan Mahoney grinded out a complete game to earn his second victory of the season.

Maryland Eastern Shore falls to 5-20 (2-4 MEAC) on the season. They will battle Mount St. Mary's at Perdue Stadium in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday (March 27).
