SALISBURY, Maryland — Marty Tolson, Jr. (Stafford, Virginia) turned in an impressive performance for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team Saturday (March 30). But a five run eighth by Delaware State spoiled the effort as the Hornets won, 6-2.
Due to potential weather, the teams advanced Sunday's (March 31) to a 10 a.m. first pitch. Maryland Eastern Shore will look to salvage a game and avoid a sweep.
Over 6 ⅓ innings of work, Tolson struck out eight Hornets to tie a career high. Delaware State only managed six spread out hits, and were shut out until Miguel Rivera homered in the sixth.
The Shore jumped out to a quick lead. Carson Davis (Oakboro, North Carolina) singled home Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) in the first. Brian Cordell (Pasadena, Maryland) extended the advantage with an RBI single in the fifth.
Tolson was pulled for Chris Sanders (Pocomoke City, Maryland), who escaped a jam in the seventh inning but immediately found himself in hot water again in the eighth. This time, Delaware State surged with four out of five men reaching base. Jared Gillis delivered a two run single for their first lead, and they added three more insurance runs.
A runner left stranded at third base in the eighth and a double play in the ninth ended Hawk comeback attempts at the end of the game.
Oxyer was the only Eastern Shore player to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Cory Poulsen (Bel Air, Maryland) also enjoyed a solid day with a 1 ⅓ scoreless relief outing.
