BALTIMORE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team fell to the UMBC Retrievers Wednesday (April 17) by a 6-1 final. The loss extends the Hawks losing streak to seven games and a 9-31 overall record.
Using a staff of relievers and position players, The Shore managed to keep pace in the game. Michael Warley (Mechanicsville, Virginia) entered as the second pitcher, making his collegiate debut on the mound. Across four innings he allowed just one run, working out of some tough jams along the way. Andre Bell (Detroit, Michigan) and Brantley Cutler (Washington, North Carolina) bookended Warley, each going two innings on the mound.
Offensively, the Hawks struggled with UMBC pitching, only mustering three hits. Their lone run came in the third when Brian Cordell (Pasadena, Maryland) tripled home Joey Nicastro (New Market, Maryland). Devynn Hancock (Salisbury, Maryland) added a hit and Avery Tunnell (Dover, Delaware) earned a walk.
UMBC remains unbeaten against Maryland Eastern Shore with seven wins dating back to 1987.
The Hawks travel to Delaware State for a weekend series beginning Thursday (April 18). Games are scheduled for 3 p.m. on the 18th, followed by a 2 p.m. contest Friday (April 19) and a 1 p.m. Sunday (April 20) finale.
