DOVER, Delaware — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell to the Delaware State University Hornets in both games of their doubleheader on Saturday (April 27). DSU won game one 3-0 and game two 8-0.
In game one, Delaware State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. It was a pitcher's duel for the most part after that with the Hornets other run coming in the sixth.
Junior LeAnn Gingrich (Landisburg, PA) threw her twelfth complete game of the season in the contest, but the Hawks managed just three hits. The hits came from junior Kamryn Lanier (Chester, VA) and seniors Kiana Peterson (Willingboro, NJ) and Daeshia Jones (Teaneck, NJ).
The Hornets got more offense in game two. Once again, they led 2-0 after the first inning. They would break the game open with a four run fourth inning to take a 6-0 advantage and cruise to victory from there.
Freshman Rachel Gingrich (Landisburg, PA) went 2-3 in game two to lead Eastern Shore at the plate. Sophomore Stephanie Huff (Montoursville, PA) and Jones each singled in the game to give the Hawks four hits for the contest.
Saturday's results eliminated Maryland Eastern Shore from participating in the MEAC Tournament in Ormond Beach, FL on May 8-11. The Shore will conclude their season tomorrow (April 28) with another game at Delaware State.
