Baseball denied series win by Coppin State

Hawks fall in finale, 8-1

SALISBURY, Maryland — Looking for a crucial series win, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore were held in check by the Coppin State Eagles. The visitors from Baltimore won Sunday's (April 7) contest by an 8-1 final.

The Shore's record falls to 9-26 (3-9 MEAC) this season.

The game started out as a possible pitchers' duel. Keith Carpenter (Walled Lake, Michigan) escaped a jam in the first and set the Eagles down in order in the second. Coppin's Devin Rivera Ozuna matched that performance.

But it was the Eagles who broke through in the third with two runs. They would add another pair in the fourth, and four more runs late. Ozuna, on the other hand, kept his pace by surrendering just three hits over six innings.

The Hawks got their run in the seventh. Blake Coleman (Woodbridge, Virginia) reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Peter Jamieson, Jr. (Carlton, Pennsylvania).

Only Devynn Hancock (Salisbury, Maryland) and Avery Tunnell (Dover, Delaware) cracked the hit column, with Hancock earning two.

Maryland Eastern Shore will play a midweek contest against La Salle Wednesday (April 10) in Philadelphia.
