BROOKLYN, New York — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks volleyball team got their first win of the season following a sweep against Saint Peter's University on Saturday evening (Aug. 30) in the St. Francis Brooklyn Tournament. The Hawks fell to Central Michigan University 3-1 in a match earlier in the day.

"It is always nice to get that first win of the year," head coach Trevor Callarman said. "It was nice to see people rise to the occasion today and I am looking forward to the opportunity to play again tomorrow and improve."

In the Hawks first match with CMU, the Hawks fell behind a set before they were able to get their offense going. Senior setter Ivana Blazevic (Zagreb, Croatia) fueled a run for Eastern Shore in the second set as she stepped to the service line with the score tied at six. She would get an ace on four of the next five points to give that Hawks an 11-6 lead. The Shore would hold on to win the set 25-22 following a kill from Ilina Spasova (Sofia, Bulgaria). CMU would rebound to win the final two sets 25-22 and 25-11.

Sophomore Alexis Lee (Wilmington, Delaware) led the match in kills as she finished with 12. Blazevic had 29 assists, nine digs and six aces in the match.

In game two, Maryland Eastern Shore jumped out early on Saint Peter's. They took set one 25-8 after SPU committed 11 errors and the Hawks had 10 kills led by Lee's five. Set two was a back-and-forth affair that saw the score reach 24-24 before the Hawks would pull away to secure the victory.

The Shore would close out the sweep with a 25-21 win in set three to secure the season's first victory. Blazevic had another strong game with 17 assists and nine digs. Fellow senior Lidia Chery (Garfield, New Jersey) had four kills and four blocks in the contest.

The Hawks will be back in action tomorrow (Aug. 31) at 11:30 a.m. against NJIT in day two of the tournament. They will face the host St. Francis Brooklyn at 7 p.m. following the first match.
